How Russia will save the north of Crimea from the water blockade of Ukraine
The problem of drought in the north of Crimea, which arose after the water blockade of the peninsula by Ukraine, will be solved by drilling deeper wells into the Miocene aquifer.
This was stated today in the Federation Council by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation Evgeny Kiselev, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We have obliged companies to move along the Miocene horizon to ensure normal water supply to the population. We solve the problems of Armyansk, but we aggravate the problems of the population. In Armyansk and Krasnoperekopsk water is used for technological needs. There is a constant salting of these waters,” Kiselev said.
At the same time, he assured that there are no problems in other regions of Crimea, but in Sevastopol there is generally a surplus of groundwater, and it can supply water to the east of Crimea. In addition, the ministry intends to look for fresh springs at the bottom of the Azov Sea and in the Black Sea to the west of the peninsula.
As PolitNavigator reported, on the night of August 24, sulfur dioxide was released into the atmosphere in Armyansk. It was established that the cause was the evaporation of the contents of an acid storage tank on the territory of the Crimean Titan plant.
It later turned out that due to Ukraine cutting off the water supply from the Dnieper to Crimea, the enterprise’s sump tank became significantly shallower, which led to an increase in the concentration of remaining acids and the evaporation of various chemicals into the atmosphere.
The Miocene horizon formed 5-23 million years ago. According to the study “Hydrogeology of the USSR”, the largest amount of exploitable groundwater reserves, equal to 666 thousand m3/day, or about 40% of all groundwater reserves in Crimea, is confined to the North Sivash artesian basin, where the main aquifers are the Pontic-Maeotic, Sarmatian , middle Miocene and in a small area of water alluvial deposits.
