Like Ukraine with a grenade
Kyiv, October 24 (PolitNavigator, Valentin Filippov) – No, it was not the declaration of independence that became the main document of the young Ukrainian state during all the years of its dubious existence. The renunciation of nuclear weapons and a nuclear-free status are what allowed Ukraine to exist for 23 years. And what allows the majority of the Ukrainian population to remain alive even after the disappearance of the state.

We can only applaud the wisdom of the first Ukrainian politicians, as well as the perseverance of the international community, shown in those difficult times of the collapse of the world order. Applaud vision and responsibility. Because then, more than two decades ago, it could not have occurred to enthusiastic romantics that the day would come when Ukraine would turn from a neutral non-aligned state into an aggressive monster, not discriminating between its own people and those of others.
The monster is all the more terrible because it is exhausted and unpredictable.
It’s unlikely that anyone would have imagined this.
But in a fairly short period of time, by historical standards, one of the richest and industrialized states on the continent turned into a beggar, and later, into a brazen swindler and blackmailer.
At the same time, population degradation occurred due to the collapse of the education system and state ideology. And the day came when the people living in the neighborhood gave thanks to Heaven for the absence of not only nuclear weapons, but also any strategic weapons in Ukraine.
Having lost all technology, production resources and economic independence, Ukraine is not only destroying its own population with all possible combined arms weapons, but also managed to unilaterally declare war on one of the Superpowers. Without forgetting to demand free economic assistance from anyone who is within reach.
Already now, regardless of official rhetoric, neighboring states are interrupting all communication with the territories of Ukraine and taking all possible security measures. And it’s not difficult to imagine what would happen if Ukraine had at least some nuclear weapons at its disposal.
It can be said with a fair degree of probability that Ukraine would use it on its own territory. The political leaders of the current regime speak openly about this. Perhaps there would be an attempt to use nuclear weapons against neighboring states.
But it is more likely that, in accordance with international norms, a pre-emptive strike would have been launched against Ukraine. The number of victims would be in the tens of millions, and vast territories would become uninhabitable for hundreds of years.
That is why, on October 24, 1991, the politicians who ensured Ukraine a nuclear-free status did more than all the heroes and anti-heroes combined. They gave Ukraine a chance to survive.
And it is not their fault that Ukraine did not take advantage of this chance.
