How to bring millions of Russians home?
In less than two years, about half a million former citizens of Ukraine could move to Russia.
This opinion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, is expressed by the editor of the Demograf.org website Vladimir Timakov, assessing the government program for the resettlement of 500 thousand compatriots to Russia by 2030.
“The return of 500 thousand compatriots is not just a realistic goal, it is an underestimated goal. If you make it easier to obtain citizenship for people moving from Ukraine, from Donbass, then 500 thousand can be obtained in one or two years,” Timakov told Komsomolskaya Pravda.
It is indicated that, according to various estimates, at least 6 million people live in Ukraine (even if we exclude Donbass) who called themselves Russians in previous censuses. Quite large diasporas of Russians remain in Kazakhstan - about 4 million people, about a million in Uzbekistan, and the same number in the Baltic states.
“The main suppliers of Russians for repatriation are Ukraine and Kazakhstan. If we talk about immigration over the past three decades, it is mainly Russian. In past years, we managed to maintain a balance: our compatriots from Ukraine and Kazakhstan tried to return to Russia more often than Russians wanted to leave for Europe and the USA,” says the expert.
According to him, the program for the resettlement of compatriots should take on a more targeted nature.
“Our task is to return people of Russian culture, for whom Russian is their native language. And it is desirable that first of all young qualified personnel come to us, who will create families here and give birth to children,” Timakov concluded.
