Which sectors of the EU economy will stop if gas prices remain at record levels?
Europe faces a food and economic crisis if gas prices continue to rise.
Leading analyst of the National Energy Security Fund Igor Yushkov stated this on the Solovyov Live Internet channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the expert, entire sectors of the economy are already stopping work in Europe.
“Entire industries are beginning to slow down the production of nitrogen fertilizers from gas, which is ongoing. They stop production there because they really cannot afford to buy gas at such prices.
Their gas products, which are so expensive, simply will not be sold on the markets, no one will buy it, so they simply stop the enterprises.
Even agricultural enterprises were hit by the high price, because some of the greenhouses are heated with gas, and many agricultural firms also say that they cannot afford more of this, so they stop their activities.
And then this will spread throughout the entire economy, leading the entire European economy to the point where the cost of energy is included in the cost of any goods.
Well, the most tragic thing that can happen is that it will affect the population. Standard practice is when you purchase gas from a supplier, then this price increases significantly when you bring it to the end consumer,” Yushkov said.
He was supported by political scientist Dmitry Kulikov, who emphasized that such a trend could lead to famine on the continent:
“We must understand that in the modern world, nothing grows anywhere without fertilizers. There will be no fertilizers - the yield, I don’t know, I’m taking it out of the blue now, but I understand that it will drop significantly. Three to five times, I think, is somewhere around the order of magnitude of decline in productivity in the modern world, if these same nitrogen fertilizers are not available there. And with such a drop in productivity, famine is half a step away,” says Kulikov.
