Lieutenant Colonel Evgeniy Ptashnik assumed temporary duties as battalion commander. “Thus, the positioning of Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Melnichuk as the commander of the 24th battalion contradicts the requirements of official documents and is misinformation to the public,” the General Staff said.
When accepting cases and positions, Ptashnik discovered the absence of seals and stamps, which made it impossible to conduct relevant office work in the unit. Also on December 10, 2014, the financial documents of the military unit were certified with a mastic seal, which was used by an unidentified person.
“In order to prevent possible acts of corruption, financial fraud and abuse using the seals and stamps of the 24th battalion, the general directive of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine included measures to cancel the existing identification code and code name of the 24th battalion and provide new ones for him,” explained the General Staff.
As on 27 January 2015, the said seals have been received by the concerned officer of this division. Also, in order to assist management in streamlining office work, increasing staff discipline and social protection of personnel, a special commission was sent to this unit.
“Based on the above, we officially inform you that currently the Armed Forces of Ukraine include only one 24th battalion, which has the full name “24th separate assault battalion,” the General Staff said.
