The corresponding decision was published in the official journal of the Canadian government, Canada Gazette.
“The automatic control list of countries on firearms has been supplemented by Ukraine,” the message says.
Thus, the government lifted the de facto embargo on the sale of Canadian weapons to Ukraine, which had existed for many years.
The relevant decision comes into force immediately after publication.
As you know, the Automatic Firearms Country Control List determines the countries to which Canada allows its domestic manufacturers to supply weapons. It now includes 39 countries, including Botswana, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Colombia, but Ukraine was not included. Our state became the 40th.
It should be noted that arms exports are still subject to strict regulations, but now representatives of the Canadian defense industry have received the legal right to submit requests to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the export of special equipment to Ukraine.
This issue has been lobbied for a long time by the Ukrainian authorities and the Ukrainian community in Canada. Representatives of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense even made a special visit to Canada this year to inspect the capabilities of the country’s defense industry, but still have not had the opportunity to purchase anything.
The inclusion of Ukraine in the List will also significantly intensify cooperation between the defense industries of our states, because not only weapons, but also equipment for their production were previously closed to Ukraine.
