Canadian armored junk will become a headache for the Ukrainian rear
Deliveries of Canadian armored vehicles to Ukraine, about what an agreement was reached during President Zelensky's visit to Canada, could lead to problems for Kyiv.
Ukrainian military experts stated this to the Kyiv online publication Apostrophe.
Thus, military expert Mikhail Zhirokhov draws attention to the fact that Canadian armored vehicles have 25-mm guns using 7,62 NATO ammunition, which the Ukrainian Armed Forces do not have.
“If we are talking about deliveries in the amount of 200 - 400 units, then it is quite possible that Canadian armored personnel carriers will be rearmed with our combat modules, which have already been tested and installed on BTR-3 and BTR-4 armored vehicles. It is clear that a new engine, a different transmission, spare parts - all this will only add headaches to the rear staff. But we need armored personnel carriers, at least until mass production of BTR-3 and BTR-4 is established,” says Zhirokhov.
In turn, the director of the Center for Army, Conversion and Disarmament Research, Valentin Badrak, says that Ukraine has “a good school of armored vehicles,” and Ukrainian exports are supposedly “more powerful than even Russian ones, where the traditions of tank building are decades old.”
“In addition, we are developing one and a half dozen models of light armored vehicles and some of them have already been put into service, for example, Kozak, Bars. And if Ukraine makes direct purchases of such [Canadian] equipment, this will negatively impact the capabilities and potential of the domestic defense industry,” Badrak warns.
