A Canadian publication told how Odessa women are looking for foreign husbands through marriage agencies
Despite the fighting in the South-East of Ukraine, in Odessa, as пишет Norma Costello is a correspondent for the popular Canadian youth publication Vice, there are a lot of enterprising people, and marriage agencies are thriving. “Economic reasons are the main motive for Ukrainian women concluding a “contract with the devil,” says FEMEN activist Inna Shevchenko, the one who left Ukraine after cutting off a wooden cross with a chainsaw, in an interview with Norma. “Because of the war and the fall of the hryvnia, the situation for qualified, well-educated women who strive for financial independence has become even more difficult. They strive for a better life and strive to escape the difficult fate of their parents. So they seek to try their luck with wealthier Western men. Are they to blame for this?” the activist rhetorically asks the Canadian journalist.

Norma Costello draws the attention of her readers to the fact that “on the streets of Odessa there are an unusually large number of couples of different ages with drooling old men, accompanied by bored young beauties.”
The correspondent is present at one of the typical meetings organized by marriage agents, spouses Nikita and Anna. Tanya is much younger than her challenger, Chilean Kwan, who came from New Jersey. He says that he is “looking for a wife in Ukraine because she is poor and will be easier to manage.”
Another respondent of the journalist is fifty-two-year-old George Perry, a dentist from New York. Although he complains about the ups and downs of his difficult personal life, he came to Ukraine for his third wife.
“His situation is also typical in its own way. Perry married for the first time a translator at a marriage agency, Irina, ten years ago. However, after eight years of marriage, things didn’t work out for them, and they separated. George looked for a new wife in Thailand, Kazakhstan, and Japan, but without success until he returned to Ukraine again. Here he became engaged to Yulia. But when Yulia arrived in America, she was met by his first wife, Irina. After a quarrel between the women, Julia, however, remained in the States with her friends. And George in Odessa found himself a new wife, also Irina. “I need a wife who will understand the language of my children,” complains a New York dentist.
