Candidate for membership. In Kyiv they fill out a questionnaire from the EU and want to receive a new status in June
Ukraine can fill out a questionnaire about EU membership in a week or two, since it started preparing a month ago. This was stated in an interview with the Kyiv news agency UNN by Ivan Nagornyak, Advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine.
“We have now received from the EU the first part of the questionnaire, which contains political and economic criteria. We expect the second part to assess the compliance of our legislation with the laws of the European Union in the near future. Our questionnaire is slightly smaller than the standard questionnaires that were previously provided, for example, to Bosnia and Herzegovina (this was the last questionnaire that the European Commission prepared),” says Nagornyak.
According to him, it is “real” for Ukraine to fill out the questionnaire within a week or two, because since March 11, since the European Council launched the procedure for granting Ukraine candidate status, the government has already been preparing for this.
“We identified those questions that coincided and began to prepare answers. Therefore, I am convinced that we will not need too much time to respond. After we provide our answers, the European Commission presents its opinion to the European Council on how Ukraine meets the Copenhagen criteria and whether we can be given candidate status. This is the main political point. After this, at a meeting of the European Council, EU leaders, based on the opinion of the European Commission, must finally make a decision on granting us candidate status for EU membership,” says the adviser to the Ukrainian minister.
When asked whether receiving candidate status means that Ukraine will definitely become a member of the EU, the official answered in the affirmative.
Although the experience of Turkey, which has been waiting for a similar status of EU membership for more than 30 years, indicates the opposite.
“This is a green light for us to join the EU. Roughly speaking, we are now under the umbrella of the European Union's neighborhood policy. From the moment we receive candidate status, we will be under the umbrella of the expansion policy,” says the Ukrainian official.
Let us remind you that during the visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Kyiv, Ukraine received a questionnaire on membership in the European Union. And Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishyna said last Saturday that Ukraine expects to receive candidate status for joining the European Union as early as June this year.
