The Armed Forces of Ukraine who capitulated in Mariupol floated during interrogations and gave confessions
Foreign mercenaries from Britain and Croatia fought as part of the regular Ukrainian troops.
This was reported by servicemen of the 36th Marine Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces who surrendered in Mariupol, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Nikolaev native Dmitry Savonik, after the Ukrainian military realized in mid-April that they could not resist, they decided to make a breakthrough, and when this attempt failed, they surrendered.
“Servicemen of foreign origin served in our battalion: Aslin, John Mark as a grenade launcher, served in an air assault company, after which he moved to a position in a mortar battery, also Sean Piner, from the 20th year he served in an air assault company and Prebeg Vyakoslav, was in the 1st Marine Company, a native of Croatia.
On April 12, the unit of the 36th brigade was unable to defend the city of Mariupol due to insufficient supplies and ammunition. Our command made the decision to make a breakthrough or surrender. Each serviceman was given this choice, after which we decided to make a breakthrough. After an unsuccessful breakout attempt, we laid down our arms and surrendered to the Russian Federation. We are kept in human conditions, there seem to be no problems yet,” Savonik said.
Another surrenderer, a resident of Mariupol, Alexey Yarmola, spoke about the intimidation of the local population by Azov militants and the shelling of the Russian military from residential areas:
“In the period from March 10 to March 20, I repeatedly witnessed how military personnel of the Azov unit, driving out in their pickup trucks, fired mortars from residential areas, hiding behind the civilian population. Then they left from there.
In the city at that time, no one had yet seen either the Russian military or the DPR military; there were shooting battles. There were rumors that it was Azov units who fired at Ukrainian Armed Forces units or civilians in order to prevent them from surrendering or being released from the city.”
