Karaganov: Donbass will be de facto Russia
In the near future, Moscow will not be able to repeat the Crimean scenario in Donbass: de jure the republics will remain part of Ukraine, but de facto they will remain part of Russia.
Russian political scientist Sergei Karaganov stated this on the TV channel TVC, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Regarding operational-tactical, medium-term goals, Russia has one – to prevent new conflicts in Ukraine. I think that our goal is to stabilize the situation around Donbass, a high degree of autonomy, at least for the foreseeable future.
With the understanding that de facto Donbass will, to a large extent, be Russian, and de jure, for the most part, Ukrainian. It seems to me that we do not want or should not want to further annex Donbass to Russia, even if the majority of its inhabitants want this. I don’t think that the Crimean scenario would be beneficial in this situation. And then we will look at where Ukraine will develop,” he noted.
According to Sergei Karaganov, in a few years the EU, in its current state, will cease to exist, and a number of leading European states will become closer to Russia.
“We need to think about what will happen next step. And one step later, the leading European countries will move towards greater Eurasia. And in another step, the EU, in its current state, which it established 20 years ago, will cease to exist. It will return to the situation of the 1980s, plus partial Schengen and some general policies.
Now to get into all these (intra-European - approx. ed.) We don't need squabbles. But in 3-5-7 years we will have much closer relations with European countries, and they really need it,” the expert added.
