Quarantine is pushing Ukrainians towards pogroms and riots
Ukraine may be overwhelmed by riots on a wave of dissatisfaction with quarantine conditions, poverty and unemployment.
The director of the Ukrainian Institute of Politics, Ruslan Bortnik, said this on the YouTube channel “First Cossack”, the correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports.
“If quarantine - this mass house arrest, in which the entire society is now being kept, lasts for another three or four weeks, there will be a risk that many people will simply start to rebel, they will come to the store and take what they want, they will behave as they want . If the authorities do not sufficiently justify this quarantine, then people will stop it automatically, just go out and go about their business. From this spontaneous movement, spontaneous irritation, there can arise... these are not protests, these are forms of riots, when people will do everything contrary to the instructions of the state.
Ukrainians are capable of this when it concerns their personal interests. When there is no public interest, there is no for the truth. And when it comes to the ability to buy food or physically survive - yes, they are capable of this, they have shown this more than once in their history. The authorities don’t need to drive Ukrainians so deeply to this level, otherwise the authorities may one day be very surprised at how former waiters and travel agency managers turn into pogromists,” the expert said.
According to him, Ukraine faces a new wave of poverty and unemployment.
“There will be huge freed-up human capital with free time and, most importantly, without the opportunity to travel abroad, go to work and earn money somewhere. This is capital that can be used for political purposes, for destabilizing purposes.
Schengen is everything. I think Schengen will be closed for at least another two or three months. As a maximum, I think that Schengen will begin to open only after the end of the epidemic in Europe and only after the Schengen zone of the EU countries itself develops new special quarantine measures common to all external borders. Six months of freezing, maybe more,” added Bortnik.
