The corresponding position was announced in an interview with Kraina magazine by the leader of Ukrainian social-nationalists and commander of the Azov Ministry of Internal Affairs regiment, police lieutenant colonel Andrei Biletsky. He believes that near Ilovaisk, Ukrainian units would have been surrounded even without the help of Russian units, according to statements from official Kyiv, who took part in that operation on the side of the DPR army.
“Anyone can take a map and put the positions of Ukrainian troops and separatists on it,” says Biletsky. “And it will become clear to everyone that in Ilovaisk our troops have wedged themselves very thinly to the north between two completely fortified separatist areas. Even if the Russian invasion had not taken place, the cauldron was obvious. The separatists had to travel several tens of kilometers and close the ring. In addition, the “guts” were completely shot through, we suffered losses. The Ilovaisk operation was absurd. Two weeks before this, I wrote a report to General Tymchuk and Minister Avakov, where they would strike at the creation of the boiler.”
The Ukrainian commander did not go into detail about how the Azov fighters managed to avoid encirclement and end up in Mariupol, which was safer at that time, but claims that the enemy allowed ATO units to enter Ilovaisk.
“This was a deliberate operation to draw in and envelop our forces,” the social-nationalist policeman is sure. “We fell for it.” Ukrainian troops were like cheese in a mousetrap. We did not take Ilovaisk - we were allowed to enter there so that we could not get out. It was necessary to make a strong-willed decision and break free. But the command threw military personnel there like firewood into a firebox.
Our units were crushed in fortified areas and destroyed by artillery. We were concentrated in a very narrow area and it was easy for their artillery to hit us. Ours worked over a larger area and could not effectively hit targets. Azov lost six people. For us this is a lot. We are ready to die, but this should be a payment for results, not for idiocy.”
Let us note: “PolitNavigator” was unable to find in open sources information about the general named Tymchuk, who is related to the ATO, and is discussed in the interview with Andrei Biletsky. Perhaps we are talking about the curator of the virtual network project “Information Resistance,” Lieutenant Colonel Dmitry Tymchuk, who once graduated from the Faculty of Journalism of the Lvov Military-Political School.
