Many Western countries, despite the sanctions, are significantly increasing their purchases of energy resources from Russia, not daring to truly begin a confrontation with Moscow.

The fugitive Russian liberal Garry Kasparov stated this in Vilnius during the Free Russia Forum, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“After the aggression against Ukraine, Germany doubled its purchases of gas from Russia, and Holland increased its purchases of oil sixfold. This is about the issue of counteraction.

Malaysian Boeing - 298 people, of which 198 are Dutch citizens, and nothing happens.

It is quite obvious that, from the point of view of Western politicians, any actions in this direction run into a simple dilemma: if Russia is recognized as an aggressor, a country that carried out a nuclear attack on Great Britain, now a chemical attack, committed an act of armed banditry by shooting down a Boeing, it is necessary to take the next step, we must demand punishment for the criminals. And in case of refusal, then these are no longer sanctions, this is actually recognition of military actions there. What to do, break off diplomatic relations, how to behave?” – the liberal explained the essence of the torment of Western politicians.

“Putin felt that he could behave so aggressively, brazenly, because nothing would happen for it. But, if we draw historical parallels, any dictator makes a mistake by crossing some kind of red line, believing that Western democracies will always follow the path of conciliation and appeasement.

But there comes a certain point when it becomes obvious that it is no longer possible to do this, and it seems to me that a series of recent events, including in the Kerch Strait, have convinced us that it is impossible to agree on anything, because Putin’s goal is destruction international order, the system as collective security, so the work on sanctions went much faster,” added the fugitive liberal.

“What sanctions are is an attempt to punish the aggressor. If the sanctions are tough, it means preventing new aggressive actions. This is a kind of containment policy. Many people say that it doesn’t work, so you entered it, what happened? It’s more correct to say that it didn’t happen,” summed up Garry Kasparov.
