“They categorically do not want to recognize the Russian Federation as a sponsor of terrorism. We need a different name” – “Ambassador” of Ukraine in the USA
The United States, by hook or by crook, rejects Ukraine’s requests to recognize the Russian Federation as a sponsor of terrorism. Other formulations are already being developed: “aggressor country” or “terrorist country”, or “aggressor country that commits terrorist attacks against the civilian population,” which will spell out only those restrictions that Washington is ready to accept.
Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova stated this in an interview with Suspilny, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Of course, we understand that she is not a sponsor of terrorism. This status was once invented specifically for countries that provide assistance to terrorist organizations on their or other territories. Russia itself is a terrorist - a country that has a regular army, a regular government, an elected president, they are all war criminals, they are all officially engaged in aggression and terrorism.
Therefore, one question is what we will call Russia, and the second is what will stand behind this name. Therefore, one of the alternative options that was discussed, it has not yet been adopted, is to find a separate category for Russia and pass a new law in Congress, calling it an aggressor country or a terrorist country, or an aggressor country that commits terrorist attacks against civilians. This is now under active discussion,” Markarova assured.
“This is a priority for us, because we want: first, to correctly name and give the correct political assessment of such actions, and second, what will be the essence of these restrictions. We believe that there should be the maximum possible restrictions, both in terms of legislative support - sanctions, restrictions, export controls, which will not allow Russia to continue to wage this war. This is still a work in progress, but it is a key priority for 2023,” the ambassador dreams.
