The Catholic West slapped Poroshenko in the face
It is becoming increasingly difficult for Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to base his next campaign for a second term on statements about a bright European future.

This opinion is expressed in his blog by Kiev political analyst Dmitry Korneychuk.
“And while “Catholic” Poroshenko celebrated Christmas for the first of two times promised for the whole country, he received another public anti-European integration “slap in the face” from the Catholic West. After which it becomes increasingly difficult for Bankova to base her presidential campaign on a bright European future. German Foreign Minister Gabriel said in an interview: in the coming years, Ukraine and Turkey will not become members of the EU. In general, it is worth developing some format of cooperation between the EU and Ukraine-Turkey, which will become an alternative to EU membership,” writes Korneychuk.
He reminds that this kind of format already exists for Ukraine – the Eastern Partnership. Now the West is starting to come up with another diplomatic “excuse” to openly “not send” Ukraine.
“You can call this initiative “Eastern Partnership 2150”. Or something similar. But the essence is clear - Ukraine will never be a member of the EU. At the same time, Türkiye understood this perfectly well. And she sharply changed her foreign policy from pro-Western to pro-Russian.
We are, of course, not Türkiye. And in Russia no one is waiting for us. But it is possible to moderate the pro-Western fervor, the expert believes. – Although Poroshenko will still tell his electorate from Western and Central Ukraine that in 2019, after his election as president, we will become a member of the EU. And they will believe it. Or not?"
