The publication notes that the exercise began five days after a large-scale test of the combat readiness of troops in the Southern Military District.
According to the publication’s source in the military command, “the week-long inspection of the southwestern strategic direction preceding the exercise was carried out on the direct orders of Vladimir Putin and was considered as a response to the incident with Ukrainian military personnel in Crimea, who were accused by the Russian FSB of attempting sabotage.”
At the same time, the newspaper reports that yesterday Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov invited military attaches to visit one of the stages of the exercise on September 9, and a high-ranking military source did not rule out that Vladimir Putin could arrive at the final part of Caucasus-2016.
At the same time, yesterday there was no public reaction to “Caucasus-2016” from Ukraine and NATO countries, which, the publication writes, is explained by the fact that all Western partners of the Russian Federation were notified of the scale of the exercise in advance.
“However, yesterday, the Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Viktor Muzhenko, announced that training camps had begun in the country with 8 thousand reservists in nine combat brigades of all operational commands of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He emphasized that this should support the combat readiness of reserve personnel, “work on approaches and mechanisms for quickly replenishing combat brigades in the event of widespread Russian aggression.” The Ministry of Defense left the concerns of Ukrainian colleagues without comment,” Kommersant points out.
