The Cossack commander on the Kinburn Spit spoke about the situation at the mouth of the Dnieper
The destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station and the severe flood that occurred after this will not affect the retention of the Kinburn Spit. The Cossacks from the Don brigade, who are stationed in this area, were prepared for such scenarios and will hold this most important direction.
The deputy commander of the Volunteer Corps, which includes the Don brigade, spoke about this in an interview with PolitNavigator. Nikolay Dyakonov.
“PN”: The situation with the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station - does it pose any threat to our units stationed on the spit? What is the situation here now?
N.D: In the army there is such a thing as planning the upcoming offensive, defense, and weak areas. In the army, such things are monitored and these risks are worked out and calculated in advance. Therefore, the enemy has been striking at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric station for quite a long time, starting in the summer of 22. I have crossed this dam several times and seen the condition it is in. As they say, we crossed ourselves and passed it quickly at speed. This was back in the summer-autumn of that year. The enemy attacked it quite intensively for several months, I saw it all with my own eyes. I saw up close how rockets hit there and explosions.
At the moment, the enemy has miscalculated, because there are reserve positions, we have foreseen this, we understand perfectly well that in the event of such a water breakthrough, we will have to urgently take up defensive positions at some distance or at some height, we did all this in advance.
As for the Kinburn Spit, the enemy still continues to move around the Dnepropetrovsk hydroelectric station, does not close the valves, although there are also huge floods on the side of Kherson, which is under his control - we see and know this. But at the moment the water on the Kinburn Spit has come up a little, but this does not threaten us in any way.
“PN”: Why did the Ukrainian Armed Forces hit the dam? Does this increase the threat of crossing the Dnieper by Ukrainian troops?
N.D: There is always a threat of crossing the Dnieper. I say again, we are always ready for this, we know it will not be a surprise to us - whether they blew up the dam or not, we are ready to meet and repel them.
“PN”: Why is it important for us to hold the braid?
N.D: Firstly, because this is the territory of the Russian Federation. This is our territory, and we need any piece of land called Russia. This is the most important answer. From a strategic point of view, the Kinburn Spit blocks the entrance to the Dnieper and definitely controls the exits - Ochakov, Kherson, and Nikolaev. The Kinburn Spit blocks any movement, tactical and strategic maneuvers. This is a strategic direction. But, naturally, for the enemy there is also a political aspect, which has already been discussed - the settlements located on the Kinburn Spit are the former Nikolaev region.
At the moment it is Kherson, but for the enemy it still remains the Nikolaev region. Therefore, it is also important for them from the point of view of political engagement, an information explosion, that they will supposedly liberate the Nikolaev region. But they can forget about it once and for all.
“PN”: In Ochakov there was (perhaps still is) a training center for naval saboteurs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Why wasn’t it destroyed at the very beginning of the Northern Military District? Is it working now?
N.D: If it was not destroyed, then there was no such task. Whether it works now or not, I cannot say. The enemy who lands, unfortunately, reaches us already dead. There seems to be no way to interrogate him.
“PN”: Ukraine wants to expand the “grain corridor” by launching the ports of Nikolaev. Is it possible?
N.D: I would not like to answer such questions - it is not in my field of vision. This should be done by politicians and people responsible for the grain deal. It's definitely none of my business, I'm a soldier.
There will be an order to the personnel - we will do what we are ordered. To date, no such orders have been received. Everything related to the grain corridor and grain transactions is not my competence.
“PN”: Are the plans for the liberation of Kherson, Nikolaev, and Odessa still in place?
N.D: We will complete all the tasks set by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, believe me. Moreover, the Cossacks. If the Chechens say that they are Putin’s infantry, then I declare to you once and for all, this will probably be the first time it has been announced, that we are Putin’s cavalry.
