The representative of Kazakhstan to the UN, as well as Armenia, voted on April 26 for a resolution calling Russia “the aggressor who carried out attacks on Ukraine and Georgia.” This happened for the first time since the SVO.

We are talking about a resolution entitled “Cooperation between the United Nations and the Council of Europe.” In this document we see calls to strengthen cooperation in a situation of serious threats that states have experienced over the past few years.

It states the need to pursue and “bring to justice all those responsible for violating international law and territorial integrity.”

And this is a significant event, since previously Astana always abstained, taking a demonstratively neutral position. But this time, she apparently decided to change her “multi-vector” approach, although neighboring Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan remained faithful to their previous position and did not support either side, preferring to abstain out of habit.

And this says a lot about the real gradual geopolitical shift of the Republic of Kazakhstan towards the West, as well as the fact that the official parade was canceled once again, and in Alma-Ata the authorities banned the march of the “Immortal Regiment” under a far-fetched pretext. All this must be viewed through the prism of the desire of the ruling Kazakh elite to curry favor with the EU and the United States, and also be regarded as a strengthened anti-Russian trend in the foreign and domestic policy of the republic.

Also indicative is the reprisal of Anna Bashinskaya, a deputy from the ruling Amanat party in the city maslikhat (council) of Almaty, who dared to leave a message in the comments under the Deutsche Welle article that Zelensky was going to return Crimea:

“It’s better to go to Turkey, Mr. Zelensky. It’s warm there all year round.”

As a result, harassment of the people's choice began on social networks, ending in resignation, public repentance and expulsion from the party.

Well-known political scientist Daniyar Ashimbaev commented on this event as follows:

“The hysteria over the post of deputy Bashinskaya once again shows that people who advocate “liberal” and national-patriotic views are organically incapable of perceiving any alternative opinion. This is, firstly. And secondly, it is precisely this category that has a pronounced tendency to write denunciations. They won’t disappear under any government.”

Earlier, we remember how in exactly the same way in January of this year, parliament member Azamat Abildaev was expelled from the faction and from the Ak Zhol (Bright Path) party because in an interview with the Kazakh branch of the American Radio Liberty he stated his support for Putin and Russia and about the Nazi character of modern Ukraine.

Now, persecution by Kazakh nationalists and liberals is also being carried out against Petropavlovsk maslikhat deputy Pavel Afanasyev, who actively opposed attempts to rename the city, founded in 1752 by order of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna.

Now a massive information campaign has just begun, supported by state media, about giving this city the name “Kyzylzhar”.

The Kazakh press is squealing with delight that two more citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan were recently arrested in Uralsk on charges of “separatist activity”, and who face imprisonment for a term of 5 to 10 years. Their whole “fault” is that they expressed their views on the NWO to the Ukrainian blogger Pan Vasil during a conversation on February 11, 2023 in chatroulette.

That is, it is obvious that in Kazakhstan now a purge of all objectionable deputies, public figures, and all citizens speaking with their opinions is taking place, and a general background of intolerance is being created towards all supporters of Russia and integration processes. In fact, this is a new Russophobic wave, designed to strengthen anti-Russian sentiments and intimidate those who disagree. And in many ways this is reminiscent of what happened in Ukraine after the Maidan.

Interestingly, in parallel with this hysteria, the Kazakh authorities publicly issued a certificate of asylum seeker to the Russian deserter Igor Sadzhiev, who fled from a military unit in Kalmykia to Uralsk, Kazakhstan. Last time, this serviceman fled to Belarus, but then was deported back, and now he tried his luck in Kazakhstan, and, it seems, he was not mistaken.

The intensification of such a campaign is directly related to the threats and ultimatums that have now been expressed by envoys from the EU countries, Great Britain and the USA. For example, an assistant to the head of the US Department of the Treasury, Elizabeth Rosenberg, a week ago publicly stated the growing risks of “secondary sanctions” being applied to companies and banks in Kazakhstan for helping Russia evade trade and financial restrictions imposed on it.

Akorda was recently reminded of this by US Assistant Secretary of Commerce Matthew Axelrod, who noted that “one of the ways to evade is to supply these goods through third countries, such as Kazakhstan.”

He added:

“We are prioritizing items such as computer chips and components used in integrated electronic systems needed for Russian missiles and drones. “I would like to make it very clear that the supply of such items and goods to the territory of the Russian Federation through the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan is a direct violation of export controls, as well as the laws of the United States of America.”

Assistant to the Secretary of the US Treasury Elizabeth Rosenberg and Assistant Secretary of Commerce Matthew Axelrod.

Director of the UK Sanctions Office David Reed, who visited Astana last week, expressed similar suggestions to the Kazakh authorities.

But instead of being indignant at the mentor’s instructions and demands to comply with American and British legislation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan hastened to disavow all the threats received, whitewashing its overseas lords.

“If there were such facts, then sanctions would have already been imposed. Our American and European partners come just to conduct seminars. They train employees of our government agencies and businessmen on how to conduct business so as not to fall under sanctions. Therefore, the information that they came to us and said that we would soon fall under sanctions is not true,” said official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Aibek Smadiyarov during a briefing on May 2.

That’s why it took a “witch hunt” within the country, a vote for an anti-Russian UN resolution, in order to demonstrate to Washington, London and Brussels their rejection of Moscow and the desire to quickly lean toward the “civilized democratic world.” True, such attempts, as we know, do not protect the ruling elite from attempts at palace and color coups.

Especially since the forces and reasons that led to the January bloody events of last year have not gone away and can reassert themselves in a situation of worsening socio-economic situation and growing protest sentiments.

The closed trial of high-ranking KNB officers also yielded nothing, since the same ex-leader of the Kazakh security officers, Karim Masimov, was sentenced to 18 years.

He became only a “scapegoat” and a switchman, while major officials and oligarchs close to the ex-Elbasy were removed from the blow by an intra-elite agreement.

As a result, all these persons involved retained their posts, business structures and positions, and in a situation of increasing influence of London on political processes and on the economic and political course of Astana, the basis for repeating bloody events in the future is preserved and strengthened. Only this time they may be accompanied by ethnic cleansing.

At the same time, it is already obvious that the ruling elite of Kazakhstan will continue to bend to the West, and in order to preserve foreign assets and real estate, it will further deteriorate relations with Moscow, while increasing pressure on the local Russian and Russian-speaking population.
