Kazakh political scientists: “Tokayev showed that Putin is behind him”
During the latest mass unrest in Kazakhstan, the lightning-fast deployment of CSTO peacekeepers became a turning point.
This opinion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, is expressed by Kazakh political experts interviewed by Kommersant.
Thus, according to political scientist Dosym Satpayev, the latest events in the country are “the result of intra-elite squabbles.”
“The intra-elite split poses a greater threat than the opposition and protests,” the expert believes.
He is convinced that the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called the CSTO, firstly, out of distrust of the Kazakh security forces, and secondly, to demonstrate: “If anything happens, Putin is behind me.”
In turn, the director of the Talap Center for Applied Research, Rakhim Oshakbaev, considers the involvement of the CSTO to be critically important.
“Both the president and the secretary of state have repeatedly repeated that we were saved from the capture of six regional centers and Almaty, and a subsequent attack on the capital, only by the lightning-fast decision of the CSTO, and above all by Vladimir Putin, to provide military assistance. The counting was literally in hours and minutes. And this became a turning point. This is not just alliance - this is real friendship. And those who feared that this would be an act of a certain Russian expansion or occupation, two weeks after the CSTO troops were withdrawn, will be convinced of the opposite,” Oshakbaev noted.
