Yesterday’s recognition by Vladimir Putin of the mistake of refusing to annex Donbass to Russia in 2014, since then such large-scale casualties could have been avoided, is an alarming signal for the people who were previously responsible for the Ukrainian direction.

Political scientist Alexander Kazakov, adviser to the deceased head of the DPR Alexander Zakharchenko, stated this on his video blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“I think that several people, not only in our country, but also abroad, will stop sleeping after these words.

On what basis does the Supreme Commander-in-Chief make decisions? Firstly, there are special departments, official departments - federal agencies, ministries and others that prepare papers for the president. It is a reference material that allows the President to make decisions with his eyes open, and advisory materials that hold agencies accountable for what they recommend...

Today’s words indicate that the information that the Supreme Commander had in 14... April-May is the preparation for referendums in the DPR and LPR, which took place on May 11 and 12, August-September is the preparation for the first “Minsk “, January-February is the preparation of the second “Minsk”. These were the key decisions that created the situation for eight years.

The key channels of information at that time were the Presidential Administration, the department that was responsible for the Ukrainian direction, then headed by Vladislav Surkov, and then the Russian Ambassador to Ukraine, who was also one of the authoritative channels of information about the situation. Plus, the Ministry of Defense, the Foreign Intelligence Service, the FSB and so on,” Kazakov listed.

He also recalled that, on the recommendation of the President of the Republic of Donbass, they did not initiate the issue of joining the Russian Federation in referendums in 2014. Then Putin was convinced that oligarch Petro Poroshenko, as a businessman, would be negotiable as Ukrainian president.

“I will remind you that shortly before the referendums in Donetsk and Lugansk, Putin made a public appeal to the residents of these regions not to hold a referendum. There was an answer, I participated in the preparation of this answer, approximately like this: “with all our respect for you, dear Vladimir Vladimirovich, we cannot do otherwise, because the people demand it.” This was not the story of a handful of activists, it was truly the demand of the people, given that Donetsk and Lugansk were looking at Crimea, which had just been reunited with Russia.

Initially, the referendum was supposed to ask two questions: on independence from Ukraine and the second, on an appeal to Russia to be accepted into Russia.

If you look at the president’s words at that time today, I do not rule out that he had in mind precisely the second question, which ultimately did not appear on the referendum ballot. In May 14, in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions they voted only for the independence of the DPR and LPR. There was no question of reunification with Russia.

Perhaps Putin was reacting to a question that did not exist, but in any case, based on the information that was provided to him. This was information from our ambassador in Ukraine.

Putin was offered to wait until May 25, when the presidential elections were held in Ukraine, with a guarantee that Poroshenko would win and with Putin’s assurance that Poroshenko, as a businessman, was negotiable, and that everything could be resolved with him. As a result, the referendums were held, you know the results. And after that the war began."

Kazakov noted that in 2014, when DPR troops were already on the outskirts of Mariupol, they received an order from Moscow to withdraw. This was also done as a result of incorrect advice - obviously, hope was now in the negotiability of the “master of Mariupol” Rinat Akhmetov.

“Our guys were on the outskirts of Mariupol, most of the Nazis fled from Mariupol. After this, an order was received from Mariupol to leave. Someone might not have obeyed the order, but in order for them not to have any doubts, they simply closed the warehouses with ammunition, fuels and lubricants, and so on. As you understand, they don’t fight without this...

If in his (Putin’s) inner circle, among those preparing his decisions, there were people who, for various reasons - some out of stupidity, some out of fear, some out of self-interest, provided him with false information, accordingly, and those decisions were made and not others. These people who were then involved in decision-making, I think, will stop sleeping for a while.”
