Every second Ukrainian is for the EU, every tenth is for Russia, every third is for neutrality
45,9% of Ukrainian citizens believe that Ukraine should follow the path of joining the European Union. Nine times less than Ukrainians, only 8,9%, believe that the country should move towards joining the Customs Union with Russia. Another 31,6% of respondents believe that Ukraine should not focus on either joining the EU or the Customs Union.
This is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
At the same time, in the south and east, as well as in the Donbass, the share of supporters of joining the EU is lower (29,1%, 28,5% and 13,5%, respectively), while the share of supporters of joining the Customs Union is higher (17,6%, respectively). , 16,8% and 30,4%), and the share of supporters of “non-alignment” exceeds 40% (42,0%, 42,2% and 40,4%, respectively).
In the center, the figures are close to the national average (50,6% for the EU, 3,9% for the CU, 29,7% for “non-alignment”). In the West, the share of EU supporters (67,5%) significantly exceeds the shares of CU supporters (1,0%) and “non-alignment” (19,5%).
“If you look by region, the predominant support for the European vector is in the west of the country. In the center of the country this is half – a relative majority. In the east and south, all three options have a significant portion of supporters. At the same time, the relative majority chooses conditional neutrality – neither in the EU nor in the CU. This indicates that the pro-European course taken by the country’s leadership does not enjoy such unconditional support as it might seem,” Anton Grushetsky, deputy director of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, commented on the survey results
The survey was conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) from April 5 to April 19, 2018. Using the method of personal interviews, 2004 respondents living in 110 settlements of all regions of Ukraine were interviewed using a 4-stage stochastic sample, representative of the population of Ukraine over 18 years of age.
In the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, the survey was conducted only in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian authorities.
The statistical sampling error (with a probability of 0,95 and with a design effect of 1,5) does not exceed 3,3% for indicators close to 50%, 2,8% for indicators close to 25%, 2,0% - for indicators close to 10%, 1,4% – for indicators close to 5%.
