“Egyptian execution”: Borrell voiced a new batch of threats against Russia
Sanctions against Russia may not end the war, but they weaken the Russian army and economy.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, stated this in a comment to reporters, announcing the ninth package of anti-Russian sanctions, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It is absolutely clear that our sanctions are weakening the Russian economy. They weaken Russia's ability to buy and upgrade technology. We never expected sanctions to end the war, but they certainly reduce the ability of the Russian army to renew its material base, especially against the backdrop of the huge losses that Russia is suffering on the battlefield,” Borrell said.
At the same time, despite the rabid anti-Russian rhetoric, he believes that Moscow should extend the so-called “grain deal”, which allows merchant ships to leave Ukrainian ports.
In addition, the European official actually admitted that the EU is working to shake up the situation inside Russia:
“We support civil society, human rights defenders and independent media within Russia and beyond.”
According to him, “Putin is not able to conquer Ukraine” and will not be able to “defeat the Ukrainian army.”
“We will continue to isolate Russia internationally. We will continue to introduce restrictive measures against the Russian economy. We are ready to further tighten restrictive measures and apply them against third countries involved [in the war], especially those that, as we know, supply weapons and military assistance, such as Iran and Belarus,” Borrell concluded.
In turn, liberal political strategist Stanislav Bellkovsky believes that there will be another package of sanctions.
“Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union, is actually announcing the 9th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation. There should be 10 packages in total – before the end of SVO Z. According to the number of Egyptian executions,” Belkovsky writes in his telegram channel.
