Hackers attack Russian research institutes
Cybersecurity experts are paying attention to an increase in the number of targeted attacks on Russian research institutes (SRIs).
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, Kommersant writes.
As Group-IB reported, Russian research institutes that specialize in military and aviation developments have recently been of great interest to foreign pro-state hackers; in addition, the structures responsible for the development of anti-Covid vaccines are at risk.
The fact that targeted attacks on research institutes have recently tended to increase is confirmed by Doctor Web.
Targeted attacks are difficult to detect because they always affect only one organization, unlike blind attacks that attack a large number of entities at once, says Igor Zdobnov, head of the virus laboratory at Doctor Web. In his opinion, hackers sponsored by states for the purpose of espionage are behind the attacks on research institutes.
First of all, research institutes are interested in hackers working for the state, because stolen information can be used for political purposes, believes Igor Zalevsky, head of the cyber incident investigation department at Rostelecom-Solar. The work of the research institute is directly related to important and unique information from various industries - these can be diagrams, product drawings, various proprietary studies that are intellectual property, the expert notes.
At the same time, Group-IB adds that recently such operations have become more and more obvious, and their emphasis is shifting from espionage to the destruction of critical infrastructure.
