For the Ukrainian leadership, implementation of the Minsk agreements is tantamount to political suicide.

Director of the Moscow Carnegie Center Dmitry Trenin stated this on the TV channel TVC.
“This leadership would have been swept away by nationalist groups within the country. It would be forced to leave with the stigma of traitors to national interests. There are few people who like to do hara-kiri. For Ukraine, the implementation of the Minsk agreements is a rejection of its basic positions of the last three years, on which the current foreign and domestic policy of Ukraine is based,” the expert said.
In his opinion, the adoption of the law on the “reintegration of Donbass” makes the implementation of the Minsk agreements in the form in which it was promoted by the Russian side impossible.
“In 17, Ukraine moved even further away from Russia. Moreover, in the direction of institutionalized hostility. The law fixes provisions on Russian aggression and occupation. This suggests that the conflict with Ukraine has become a very long-term factor, constitutive of the current model of the Ukrainian state. Right next door to us, from a fraternal country, a hostile political nation of 40 million people is emerging, based on anti-Russianism. This is something we will have to live with for a very long time,” Trenin believes.
