Svidomo residents of Kharkov discovered something “terrible.” And not somewhere on the dusty outskirts, but in the very heart of the city, at the entrance to the main building of KhSU, on the pedestal of the monument to the founder of the university Vasily Karazin.

“This was noticed near Karazin University,” – the Kharkov News telegram channel is indignant and provides a photo of the saying of the enlightenment scientist, imprinted in copper casting on the right side of the monument.

“Blessed a hundredfold if chance has given me the opportunity to do the slightest good to my dear Ukraine, whose benefits are so closely linked with the benefits of gigantic Russia.”

Apparently, petrified by the suddenly revealed horror, the author of the photo did not deign to examine the monument from other sides. And there it’s no better.

“The main subject of the establishment of the university was the welfare of my dear country and the midday region of Russia,” - on the left side of the pedestal - and “Vasily Nazarovich Karazin, who laid the foundation of the Imperial Kharkov University.”

It’s surprising how the nationalists didn’t notice the “ugliness” earlier. At the same KhSU there is a completely radical (albeit small) group of students. They, however, have another urgent task - the fight against the Russian language.

It was not enough for the “activists” that the position of a language ombudsman was established at the university (for the first time in Ukraine) after a number of language scandals. This was the head of the Ukrainian language department, Nikolai Filon. However, the radicals decided that the teacher could not be trusted on such an important issue - personal connections with colleagues, corporate solidarity, all that. Therefore, after a meeting of the Student Council with the Commissioner for the Protection of the Language, Taras Kremen, they elected their own student language ombudsman.

The “honorary” position was received by third-year student of the Faculty of Philology Tatyana Szegeda. Now denunciations about criminal teaching in Russian will begin to flow. In some ways, the proponents of the language can be understood. Notes often become their only source of knowledge. Most of the basic textbooks for more than thirty years of “independence” have not been translated into the state language.

In general, it’s not easy for Svidomo citizens in Kharkov - there’s no end of work, you can’t keep track of everything. In the city, at every step there are still monuments from, if not the imperial, then the Soviet period. Moreover, the constant efforts of city authorities to rename streets are often not translated into signposts, which also upsets the “activists.”

So the only things that please the eye of a Svidomo citizen are the paintings on walls and fences, and flower beds of “patriotic” content. True, for the May holidays, Kharkov residents received a generous gift from the mayor’s office: a panel entitled “Ukraine Above All” appeared in the metro. Kharkov war diary. The author of the work placed Grigory Skovoroda, the Virgin and Child, Archangel Michael, Taras Shevchenko, Zelensky and Zaluzhny (posthumously?) in the unified formation of fighters for “Ponadusya”.

It should be noted that the Kharkov mayor's office and the regional administration did everything in their power to prevent the celebration of Victory Day in the city from taking place. The day before Zelensky’s decree on “cancelling” May 9 and celebrating Europe Day instead, an order was issued in Kharkov not to hold any public events on May 8 and 9, allegedly “for security reasons.” However, the mayor of Kharkov Terekhov hastened to declare that he approves of Zelensky’s decision.

“Our enemy celebrates May 9th. May 8 is our next step, with which we demonstrate that we are fighting this enemy who has come to our land. Another step towards the European community. The attitude is that May 8 is Victory Day,” the official voiced his position.

And in order for as few Kharkov residents as possible to come to the Great Patriotic War memorials on Victory Day, the security forces announced a “counter-sabotage operation” in the city, and they are carrying it out very zealously. On one holiday alone, 65 people were detained “in connection with suspicion of involvement in sabotage and reconnaissance groups.”

And, nevertheless, starting from the early morning of May 9, Kharkov residents bring flowers to the monument to the Soldier-Liberator, aka, simply and respectfully, the Soldier. Some do it furtively, others openly, in front of the patrols. Utility workers regularly remove flowers, but fresh bouquets appear again and again. And on Victory Day, despite everything, in transport and on the streets people sometimes loudly expressed indignation at Zelensky’s decree.

“He wants us to forget... Forget the millions of dead? In every family, someone died. Reconciliation? We’ve already reconciled!”

It is significant that local publics are either worried about the “zrada” of Karazin 200 years ago, or rejoice over the absurd project of the regional council to rename another (yes!) settlement in honor of the semi-mythical commander-in-chief Zaluzhny, but remain steadfastly silent about the really important ones and current events.

For example, about the transfer of the village of Masyutovka under the control of the RF Armed Forces. Which, in turn, allowed the Russian military to gain a foothold on the western bank of the Oskol River. Taking into account the destruction by Russian artillery of a number of Ukrainian Armed Forces warehouses in Kupyansk, this may indicate the end of the calm in this direction.
