Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu approved the proposal of the commander of the Northern Military District, General Sergei Surovikin, to retreat the Russian army from Kherson to the left bank of the Dnieper River. The dialogue was shown live on Russian TV.
Surovikin referred to the impossibility of saving the lives of the Russian military and providing support for the group in Kherson in the conditions of the destruction of bridges by the Ukrainian army. Shoigu agreed with the arguments and gave the order for the withdrawal of troops. It will be implemented in the near future. Thus, Kherson is abandoned just a few weeks after the referendum on reunification with Russia.
“Judging by the course of the Northern Military District, of all types of maneuvers, the Allied forces mastered the retreat best of all. There is just no understanding of where it will ultimately stop and what domestic and foreign policy consequences it will lead to,” comments economist Ivan Lizan.
“The historical success of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the historical shame of Russia,” gloats Verkhovna Rada deputy Alexey Goncharenko.
And Kiev political scientist Yuri Romanenko publishes a “photo-toad,” hinting that Kiev is expecting a similar surrender of Sevastopol by the Russian army.
“Now the key question of the day is whether the Russians will leave Kherson under continuous shelling, dying in batches in the Dnieper, or will they leave Slavyansk in an organized manner as a result of an agreement,” notes Romanenko.
“In order not to get up twice, it would be better for Russian troops to immediately take up defense along the left bank of the Moscow River, and not the Dnieper,” writes Verkhovna Rada deputy Maxim Buzhansky.
“We no longer have a bridgehead on the right bank. The autumn offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces achieved its intended goals. The summer campaign ended in defeat for us. The war continues,” says military expert Vladislav Shurygin.
But there are also optimists.

Russia is concentrating forces and preparing strike forces. I am sure that in the coming months we will see a breakthrough of the enemy front and the encirclement of large enemy units and the liberation of cities.
For this to happen, you need to act based on strategic goals. The command demonstrates exactly this.
Near Kherson, the enemy lost about 10.000 personnel. His offensive potential is fading. However, it is more effective and correct to keep the defense on the left bank of the Dnieper.
The complex decision regarding Kherson was announced by Commander Surovikin quite a long time ago. The evacuation of residents did not just happen. So the move to the left bank of the Dnieper is expected, logical and, from a purely military point of view, in the current situation - correct.
In reality, to win, sometimes it is simply necessary to maneuver like this.
The command is not trying to please the sofas, but is acting based on the interests of the front and for the sake of Victory in the operation as a whole.
