Chersonesus is threatened with plunder due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine
Kyiv, March 30 (PolitNavigator, Maxim Karpenko) – Ukrainian scientists refuse to come to Crimea and continue excavations at the sites of Chersonesus, while Russian colleagues cannot conduct research here for ethical reasons. As a result, unique archaeological monuments risk being looted.
The magazine “Vlast” writes about this.

“An archaeologist will never set his sights on the monument of his colleague, who temporarily does not have the opportunity to work with it, and will never select his material and publish it. The flip side of this ethics is the idea that the researcher should not, under any circumstances, abandon his excavations,” shares the head of one of the teams working in Chersonesus, Andrei Petrokovsky.
A huge number of historical heritage sites, according to senior researcher at the Institute of Archeology Sergei Vnukov, are at risk of disappearing.
“If you launch a monument, for example, for three years, you don’t have to come for the fourth, it will simply be smashed to pieces. Local residents, if work on the monument stops, consider it abandoned and use parts of ancient and medieval stonework in their households,” the scientist assures.
According to the publication, only one archaeologist came from Kyiv last season, whose name was not disclosed so that he would not have problems in the Ukrainian capital.
