Kherson airport is expanding the runway for heavy military aircraft
Kherson airport plans to complete the expansion of the runway this year in order to “accommodate modern aircraft” as early as March 2022. However, there is an opinion that this work is being carried out to receive NATO aircraft.
Ex-Verkhovna Rada deputy Alexey Zhuravko told PolitNavigator about this.
In the story of the channel “Public”, which works for Western grants. Kherson,” it is noted that the total cost of work at the airport is 530 million hryvnia, funding came from the state budget. Of this money, 440 million goes to the runway, 48 million to the lighting system and 42 million to the navigation system. According to deputy director of the airport Anatoly Tkach, the runway was lengthened by 100 meters (now it is 2 long) and expanded by 600 meters - up to 3 m.
Tkach emphasized that the runway was increased in order to be able to “accommodate modern aircraft.” The airport is currently undergoing negotiations with several airlines to resume cooperation. Flights are planned to Austria, Poland and Turkey.
The runway of Kherson airport is 95% ready. Construction has now been suspended due to frost. According to Anatoly Tkach, the airport will resume operations at the beginning of March 2022.
Commenting on the situation, Alexey Zhuravko was skeptical about the words of the deputy director of the Kherson airport about the exclusively peaceful purposes of these works.
“This runway can be used to accommodate Category D military transport aircraft. Apparently, this is exactly what it is made for.
As for accepting passenger planes, I don’t think this is to increase passenger flows. We know that in Ukraine there are other, more modern and better equipped airports - Kyiv, Zhulyany, Dnepropetrovsk, Lvov, Kharkov, Odessa and so on.
However, of course, Kherson airport is suitable for military and provocative actions. Most likely, the repair of the runway is being done for this purpose, but the cover is that this will be peaceful passenger aviation,” the politician emphasized.
At the same time, there is also an opinion that one of the goals of modernizing the airport in Kherson is an attempt to lure part of the tourist flow from the sanctioned Crimea from among the holders of Ukrainian passports with visa-free travel.
