The process of decommunization in Kharkov slowly started. For the first time, a working group met in the City Council to discuss how to carry out this very decommunization.

More than two hundred streets, several metro stations, as well as almost all areas of the city need to be renamed. This will require a lot of money, so until 2016, lovers of old names have nothing to fear - there is nowhere to get funds for new signs.

The fate of Kharkov streets will be decided by 30 people. City Council officials, deputies, historians, and university rectors will choose new toponymic names and think about how to bring them to life at the least financial cost. The main problems today are lack of money and lack of time.

“First of all, we will determine how much money this case will require. Now the figure is unknown, even approximately,” says Alexey Khoroshkovaty, secretary of the toponymic commission of the City Council, about the urgent concern.

It will not be possible to make the renaming quick for another reason: local elections are coming up. At least until October, it is not advisable to change addresses - there may be confusion in the documentation of election commissions and precincts.

However, Kharkov nationalists were dissatisfied. They believe that the reason is different.
“There is no threat to the elections, but there is a threat to lose the electorate - people will be unhappy with the changes,” says Prosivti member Maria Takhtaulova, who attended the commission meeting.
