In order to reap not the consequences of incorrect or poorly timed decisions, but the fruits of successful decisions, Russia needs to learn to walk with a “sailor’s gait,” that is, gain the ability to remain stable when the deck under its feet is “stormy.”

This figurative comparison was made by the commander of the DPR militia and the founder of the Vostok battalion, Alexander Khodakovsky, commenting on the progress of the Northern Military District in Ukraine in his blog.

“I remember the fourteenth year and the difference in approaches between us - those who opposed the Maidan Kyiv and, in fact, wrote the prologue to the current situation, and the curators who were assigned to us from above. Here’s a simple situation for example: having realized that Kyiv’s central goal in the field of propaganda is to turn us into orcs, we set ourselves the goal of preventing them from dehumanizing us.

Then the whole of Ukraine was closely watching us, and it seemed right to us to intelligently and competently present us to those who want to understand us. We invested money, created a channel, recruited a great team, and went for permission... Sitting in a fashionable Moscow restaurant and picking out leftover food from his teeth, looking up from his plate, Surkov’s assistant said a short “no”
- How? Why? Is this the right thing to do?!
- We don't need this.
The rendezvous is over…” recalls the militia commander.

According to Khodakovsky, the war in Ukraine will become a trigger for large-scale changes in Russia itself, and since yesterday will no longer be the case. Therefore, it is important to start these changes in time.

“It is important to understand that “tomorrow” in the new conditions will no longer be the same as “yesterday.” Neither annexed territories, nor changes in sentiment within the country will contribute to keeping “everything” in the “as is” mode - this, however, is very important to understand. There are no stable static systems - the system must keep up with the times. This creates a feeling of fear about the risk of losing control, but the risks of losing control are much higher if you do not demonstrate the ability to evolve,” warns the former DPR Security Council Secretary.

Political expert Alexey Chadayev expresses similar thoughts on his blog.

“Why is official agitprop always determined to engage in demobilization, and always strives to discredit, and even outright destroy, any activism, especially - and primarily - patriotic? The fact is that this is energy with which the “system” simply does not have any mechanisms to work. Metaphor: water is accumulating, the dam is standing, but there is no spillway with turbines that could generate electricity; Yes, even without turbines, sooner or later it will burst. What's left to do? - just drain the reservoir.

Why are there no such mechanisms, but those that exist are parties, elections, NGOs, “public chambers”, “popular fronts”, etc. — regularly degenerate into fiction and decoration? Because such mechanisms, if they actually work, are also personnel machines - they naturally form “reserve benches”, potentially capable of occupying any position in the state and definitely more prepared for it than those who are there now. For example, any volunteer coordinator now sees and understands the problems of supplying the army no worse than the heads of departments in the Ministry of Defense - he has it from the earth, this understanding, and they have been hatching their stars there for decades. Or any military correspondent now understands no less about the information war than the heads of central television channels. Etc".
