It’s not cold: Russophobic horror stories about Gazprom’s monopoly in Europe on the eve of the heating season have come to naught

Thus, the author recalls that recently the Chairman of the Board of Gazprom, Alexey Miller, while in Paris, said that the concern is recording increased demand for Russian gas in countries along the route of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
“For example, the growth of our deliveries to Germany from September 1 to 15 amounted to 27,9% compared to the first half of September 2015, to Austria - 39,7%, to Denmark - 221,8%. The Nord Stream 2 project is being implemented according to schedule,” Miller said, adding that Russian gas supplies to France from January 1 to September 13, 2016 amounted to 8 billion cubic meters, which is 27,3% more than in the same period in 2015.
“The concern is also making progress in terms of promoting infrastructure projects for gas delivery to Europe,” the expert notes. – Gazprom has received new permits from Turkey for the construction of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline. As the company clarified, as part of the preparatory procedures for resuming the project, permission has already been received from Ankara through diplomatic channels to lay the offshore section of the highway. True, it has not yet been clarified which specific section of the gas pipeline we are talking about, but we can assume that this is the former section of the South Stream, which, as is known, replaced the Turkish Stream.
“In general, we can conclude that the position of the Russian holding in the European gas market is now noticeably strengthening. The harsh rhetoric of individual countries of the Old World with a Russophobic bias and horror stories about Gazprom’s hegemony has come to naught with the approach of the heating season. In addition, it is noticeable that Brussels has now almost removed from the agenda all kinds of active discussions of phantom construction projects alternative to Russian gas pipelines,” Pasechnik sums up.
