Croatian sadistic executioners were sentenced to formal terms by their native court

A regional court in the Croatian city of Split sentenced Marinko Marić and Zeljko Rodin to 4,4 and 3,1 years in prison for the sophisticated torture and robbery of Bosniac civilians in the Gabela, Silos and Dretelj camps in 1993.

During the bloody war in Bosnia, Marić and Rodin acted as investigators for the Security and Information Service (SIS) of the Croatian Security Council (HVO) "Prince Domagoj" brigade, which invaded the neighboring republic to help their Bosnian compatriots in the fight against the superior forces of the Muslim Bosniaks. .

After in 1992, the Bosniaks, together with the Croats, managed to clear the Serbian population from the areas where their communities were densely populated, in 1993 they passionately squabbled among themselves, the Bosnian Croats wanted to join Croatia, the Bosniaks wanted to create a mono-ethnic and mono-confessional state.

According to the prosecution, in Bosnia Maric and Rodin became famous for their fanaticism against the civilian Bosniak population. The most serious episode of the accusation against them was the beating of civilian Enver Shabanovich, who died as a result of his injuries.

The fanatics beat their victims with sticks and kicked them in the genitals, forced them to drink their own urine, lick their own blood and the blood of their comrades from the floor, stand in the sun at high temperatures, dressed in winter clothes, and lie naked on hot asphalt. The executioners also took away valuables and watches from them, saying that they would no longer need them.

The indictment states that between June and October 1993, Maric beat detainees with a wooden stick, a machine gun, and with his hands and feet. Those who had already been beaten and brought to Gabela from the town of Stolac in a semi-conscious state were trampled underfoot and forced to line up. He sang Ustasha songs to the beaten and exhausted, swore at them, threw metal objects at them, tied a belt around their necks and lifted them up and down, poured water into their nostrils, and inserted the barrel of a pistol into their mouths.

In early August 1993, Rodin, together with unidentified members of the HVO, beat five civilians in the Dretel camp with metal pipes, machine guns, wooden sticks, legs and arms in all parts of the body. According to witnesses, the fanatics took greatest pleasure in tormenting representatives of municipal authorities and the intelligentsia.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty, although Maric asked for forgiveness from his victims.

It is characteristic that the town of Stolac during Yugoslav times was considered a tourist pearl and was called the “Bosnian Venice” because of the cascade of picturesque fountains located right on the territory of the town, and many buildings of the 18th century.
