“The Master of Moldova” came up with a new holiday for May 9
This year's celebration of May 9 in Chisinau will demonstrate how politicians are dividing the people of Moldova and are unable to reach agreement.
President Igor Dodon addressed his fellow citizens with an appeal to take part in the procession with portraits of their warring ancestors. He did not call this action “Immortal Regiment”.
“This Victory Day is special for us, because this year we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Moldova from the fascist invaders. We gather at the Victory Arch to march in a single column with portraits of our heroes to the Eternity Memorial of Military Glory. Let's celebrate the Victory together! We remember, we are proud!” Dodon wrote on his Facebook.
He also invited the residents of Chisinau to a festive concert, in which, in addition to the best artists of Moldova and the presidential orchestra, the “star” from Russia Valeria will take part. The holiday will end with colorful fireworks.
Two more processions will be dedicated to Victory Day. One will be held by the Shor party, which is considered a spoiler set up against Dodon’s socialists by the “master of Moldova”, oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc.
Separately, pro-Russian citizens will be held with distrust of all politicians. Their only procession will be called the “Immortal Regiment.”
The fact that there will be as many as three columns of citizens wishing to celebrate Victory Day on May 9 in the Moldovan capital apparently made the Democratic Party of the odious Plahotniuc think. In past years, she successfully celebrated Europe Day by shamelessly occupying the main square and forcing the socialists to hold their actions a day earlier.
This year there is no resource to postpone Victory Day, just as there is no courage to celebrate Europe Day. The Democrats thought right up to May 7, after which they invited citizens to “celebrate the peace and prosperity of Moldova.” There is no such holiday in the country's national calendar. The festivities will be a strange hybrid of songs and dances, children's attractions and "soldier's food."
By celebrating “peace and prosperity,” the Democrats seem to be sending a signal to both the pro-Russian socialists and the pro-European ACUM bloc that they are ready to create a coalition and form a government with both. However, reputational costs do not allow either one or the other to enter into alliances with Plahotniuc.
