“Stop feeding the IMF.” Ukrainian politicians demand to declare a default
Ukraine should refuse to pay its debts to the IMF and use these funds to overcome the coronavirus epidemic.
Former Verkhovna Rada deputy Mikhail Dobkin stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Dobkin, the IMF must wait three years to get its money back.
“There is no need to give money to the IMF - they are playing a dishonest game with us, they are giving us conditions that are unfavorable to us, they are taking advantage of our difficult situation. But in the conditions that the whole world finds itself in today, we don’t have to take money from them; we have budgeted for servicing external debts, paying off the “body” and paying interest on external debts. They can be frozen and used for the Ukrainian people’s need to survive.
In the end, if we all die out here, no one will give the money to the IMF anyway, right? Therefore, they will endure, they will not go anywhere. They’ll be patient for a year or two or three until we accumulate some fat,” Dobkin said.
He was supported by Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleg Voloshin on TV channel 112. He emphasized that Ukraine may refuse to repay loans under the pretext of the coronavirus pandemic, which falls under the definition of force majeure.
“We need to take some steps regarding our external debt. We cannot afford, in a situation where the country and the economy is falling into the abyss, to sit and pay the IMF and our other creditors billions as if nothing had happened... The current pandemic in the world is a classic situation of force majeure, in which all previously taken loan obligations can be revised,” Voloshin said.
