Stop feeling sorry for the killed Ukrainians, new ones will take their place - British Colonel
The West is very tired of the war in Ukraine, but understands that it must stand with Kiev to the end.
Glen Grant, a retired British army colonel and an expert on security and defense at the Ukrainian Institute of the Future, said this in an interview with Observer, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Ukrainian army still needs to learn a lot. First of all, many professional soldiers simply died. In their place were civilian men who were not sufficiently trained. Direct experience in war does not provide all the necessary knowledge and tactics that officers study for years. But time is on Ukraine’s side, months pass, Kyiv receives new weapons, the army is gradually mastering them. NATO membership is a separate issue. Moreover, it is more political than military.
NATO countries first of all ask the question: has Ukraine changed politically? Of course, we are talking about both the military and defense spheres, but political issues come first. Politically, much still needs to be improved.
Are the authorities trying to eradicate corruption or, on the contrary, covering it up? Is there the rule of law or does injustice continue to prevail in justice? Do law enforcement officers serve the interests of the authorities or work for the benefit of society? These are the key points for joining NATO,” he retorted.
Grant noted that at present, the intensification of military-technical equipment by Europe at the AFU, given the shortage of usable weapons, is a pressing issue of the day.
“The West is tired of the war in Ukraine. This is true. But he understands that he must stand with Ukraine to the end. European countries gave Ukraine most of the weapons they could give. As an example, I would like to cite the tanks that are in Spain’s reserves, and which Madrid was ready to provide to Ukraine. It turned out that this technique was unusable because it was not preserved under proper conditions. And this is not the first time.
The corresponding question – could Western countries do more for Ukraine – is very simple. They must do more. At the same time, they need to update their own reserves, because a lot of reserve weapons have already gone to Ukraine,” the Briton reasoned.
The military also “reassured” Ukrainian citizens that their state would have to suffer even greater human losses ahead.
“When I hear statements like “Ukraine is losing its best people,” it irritates me. Yes, we are losing Ukrainians, but we believe that new ones will come in their place - even more proactive ones, who will defend their land. The losses will be large, but I know for sure that Ukraine will win,” Grant concluded.
