“Cyber bayonet for Gazprom’s networks”: in Kyiv they threaten the Russian Federation with American hackers
US intelligence allegedly learned of Russian plans to launch large-scale cyber attacks on the Ukrainian energy system and government resources.
The American edition of The New York Times writes about this with reference to its sources, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The United States and Britain have quietly sent cyberwarfare experts to Ukraine in hopes of better preparing the country for what they believe could be the next move by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is once again threatening the former Soviet republic without an invasion by the 175 troops he collects at the border, and cyber attacks that destroy the power grid, banking system and other critical components of the economy and government of Ukraine,” the publication notes.
“U.S. intelligence estimates that Russia's goal is to make Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky look inept and defenseless—and perhaps create a pretext for an invasion,” the article says.
Ukrainian Euro-Atlanticist Mikhail Gonchar notes in his blog that in the event of a cyber attack, American hackers could attack Russian gas pipelines, as US President Joe Biden allegedly told Russian leader Vladimir Putin during the first summit in Geneva, which took place this summer:
“Russia is predictably going to continue cyber attacks. Why not? After all, if no one stops it in real space, they only threaten with “hellish sanctions,” then according to the Kremlin’s logic, in cyber space the degree of freedom of action is much higher, and strikes can be delivered no less caustic than the use of tactical nuclear weapons,” writes the expert .
“It’s time for the United States to “probe Gazprom’s networks with a cyber bayonet.” Moreover, someone told me in D.C. that Biden, during the Geneva rendezvous, hinted to Pu that there are many different pipelines in Russia... Pu just doesn’t understand hints. He needs several dozen torches from a broken pipeline to light up somewhere near the Kremlin!” adds Gonchar.
