At the same time, on Wednesday and Thursday, facts were noted of the Ukrainian army using aerial bombs and firing cluster munitions from the Smerch heavy multiple launch rocket system (MLRS), which the security forces had previously refrained from doing.
As the chairman of the Lugansk regional council, Valery Golenko, stated in an address to Poroshenko, as a result of “the shelling by the Ukrainian military of the village of Lugansk and the village of Staraya Kondrashovka, 12 civilians were killed” and dozens were injured. At least a dozen people died in Kramatorsk, which was also shelled by the Smerch MLRS on Wednesday (photos of unexploded submunitions and the missile itself appeared on social networks).
Regarding the bombing near Lugansk, the press center of the anti-terrorist operation first reported that planes did not fly in this area, the artillery fired in the other direction, and the former acting... O. Defense Minister Mikhail Koval said that artillery was not used in residential areas in accordance with Poroshenko’s instructions. Yesterday, when the fact of the airstrike on Staraya Kondrashovka was already difficult to deny, activist Dmitry Tymchuk, close to the Ukrainian security forces, said that the attack could have been carried out by Russian planes.
The warranty period for the ammunition used by the Ukrainian army has long expired, says reserve colonel Viktor Murakhovsky: for example, the engines for Smerch missiles have a warranty period of 15 years, and these missiles were produced in the last years of the USSR, i.e. about 25 years back. The Ukrainian military knows very well that the trajectory of such ammunition is unpredictable, but apparently they have no others, the expert believes.
