“Among other things, the Ambassador of Ukraine officially informed the Moldovan side about the decision of the Ukrainian government to support the position of the Moldovan side on the admission to participate in international road traffic from September 1, 2021, only those vehicles from the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova that will have registration license plates of the agreed pattern and sticker “MD”, together with other vehicles registered in accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Moldova,” said a press release from the Ukrainian Embassy in Chisinau.

The parties discussed a wide range of issues on the bilateral agenda, including coordinated joint actions to implement the agreements of the President of Ukraine and Moldova, reached during the visit of the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, to Ukraine on January 2021, 12.

Let us note that a year ago the government of Ion Chicu, appointed by then President Igor Dodon, tried to introduce restrictions for Pridnestrovians. From January 10, 2020, Moldova demanded that Pridnestrovian transport cross the border with Ukraine only on neutral license plates with a technical passport of the established form and with the “Md” sticker.

After the Security Council of Transnistria threatened a symmetrical measure - a ban on cars with Moldovan license plates crossing the Transnistrian section of the border with Ukraine - Chisinau was forced to cancel its decision.
After this, the Moldovan government stated that Ukraine was introducing restrictions, but Kiev denied this information.

Then the Ukrainian embassy in Chisinau explained that Kyiv, while remaining a mediator in the negotiations in the “5+2” format, does not intend to bear image costs.

The PMR Foreign Ministry today reminded Ukraine that it previously took a more balanced approach.

“In the absence of a viable alternative allowing any citizen of Pridnestrovie to participate in international road traffic, the use of such restrictive measures has no basis, contradicts the principles of the negotiation process and is fraught with violations of the rights and freedoms of Pridnestrovians, including about one hundred thousand citizens of Ukraine,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. PMR.

Since 2018, there has been a mechanism for issuing neutral numbers. But the obstacles created by Moldova do not allow all categories of citizens of Transnistria to participate in international traffic, also excluding freight and passenger vehicles.
