PMR President Vadim Krasnoselsky stated this in an interview with Nezavisimaya Gazeta, according to whom the blockade is far from the main goal pursued by the synchronized actions of Ukraine and Moldova.
“The checkpoint on the Transnistrian section of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border is Moldova’s step towards joining NATO and the EU. The uncontrolled border hindered Moldova's Euro-Atlantic integration. This also applies to Ukraine - it also strives to join the EU and NATO, and it has unresolved territorial disputes and an open border - with the Russian Federation in the Donbass region and, until recently, with Moldova (Transnistrian section),” said the head of Transnistria.
According to him, “the actual closure of Moldova’s Transnistria border with Ukraine is a blow to Russia’s interests.”
“220 thousand citizens of the Russian Federation live in Transnistria. It is in relation to them that access to the Odessa region will be limited, their rights will be infringed. I will defend their rights. I hope Russia will not abandon its citizens,” Krasnoselsky noted, adding that the Russian Federation has leverage over Chisinau.”
In addition, the President of the PMR is convinced that “the posts on the border are the beginning of Chisinau’s forceful scenario against Transnistria.”
Krasnoselsky also recalled that President of Moldova Igor Dodon, who advocates dialogue with Transnistria and restoration of ties with Russia, also supported the idea of establishing joint Moldovan-Ukrainian checkpoints, although at the last meeting of the permanent meeting on political issues within the framework of the negotiation process to resolve the Transnistrian conflict in the format “5+2” made a decision: everything related to Transnistria should be discussed at the negotiating table in the presence of representatives of Tiraspol.
The publication draws attention to the fact that Moldovan and Ukrainian police units have been deployed to the PMR border and points out that the Chisinau press noted that “the situation is reminiscent of the pre-war one.”
At the same time, President Poroshenko said that Ukraine is ready to “contribute as much as possible to the restoration of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova.”
