Kyiv will lose its main symbol - it was devoured by moths
Kyiv will lose its main symbol - the chestnut trees on Khreshchatyk, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Kyiv is a city of chestnuts. Everyone knows the song about “Kiev chestnuts”; this tree is depicted on the cake and the former coat of arms of the city. Unfortunately, the main symbol of the city is now going through hard times, the trees suffer from diseases and die. Experts are confident that it is time to replace chestnuts with other trees,” says the publication of Znayu.ua.
As another Kiev publication “Informator” reports, there are now 232 holes on Khreshchatyk, in which new trees should be planted.
According to the publication, among the trees that should be planted on the main street of the Ukrainian capital are plane tree and bird cherry. Kiev residents voted for these trees online on the city hall website.
According to the acting general director of the Kyivzelenbud KO Natalya Belous, the central chestnuts, unfortunately, are no longer possible to save.
“We tried to treat them for moths, but moths start on already diseased chestnuts. That is, you can rid it of moths, but the tree is already sick. The only way out is to treat them with chemicals. But spraying chemicals in the city center is dangerous for people's health. One way or another, we will have to find an alternative to chestnuts,” says Natalya.
The majority of representatives of the Kyiv authorities are in favor of replacing chestnuts with plane trees. This tree resembles a chestnut, but is easier to care for. In addition, this type of tree is quite easy to take root in different conditions.
Chestnut trees will be finally removed from Khreshchatyk in 2019, as part of the overhaul of Khreshchatyk.
