Kyiv hopes in vain for McCain's man
The appointment of Kurt Volker, who was distinguished by anti-Russian statements and was called the man of Russophobe Senator John McCain, as the US special representative for Ukraine, will not strengthen Ukraine’s position.

International political scientist Vladimir Volya said this at a press conference in Kyiv, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent, who noted that it is not entirely justified to use the cliche “McCain’s man” in relation to Volcker.
“From a formal point of view, Kurt Volker is a subordinate of Rex Tillerson. He may be anyone's man, but the fact remains that he is part of the State Department, and not some personal staff of Senator McCain. I think this will strengthen the work of Tillerson’s team, but I doubt that it is right to talk about strengthening Ukraine’s position,” the expert said.
In his opinion, Volcker will be a tough negotiator in relation to both Russia and Ukraine.
In addition, the appointment of such a person as a special representative for Ukraine is reinsurance for the Trump team, which is thus trying to protect itself from accusations of collusion with Russia, Volya believes.
