Kyiv is dissatisfied: Supporters of dialogue with the Russian Federation are joining the EU leadership
Ukrainian media are unhappy with the agreed upon candidates nominated for the posts of new top leaders of the European Union.
“European Truth” writes on this topic, in particular, pointing out that German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen has been nominated for the post of President of the European Commission, and Acting President of the European Council. Prime Minister of Belgium Charles Michel.
The position of the German politician regarding Ukraine in the publication is called “ambiguous”, since Leyen called for mutual understanding between Ukraine and Russia, did not see the need for NATO’s military presence in Poland and the Baltic states, and also opposes the supply of weapons to Ukraine.
“If the German politician made statements both in support of Ukraine and vice versa, then the experience of her Belgian colleague is much more clear,” the publication continues.
It is noted that Michel is a verbal supporter of continuing anti-Russian sanctions.
“However, sources of European Pravda, familiar with non-public communications, assure that at closed meetings I heard something different from my Belgian colleague - they say, a year and a half ago, at the last meeting with Poroshenko, he convinced that it was time to soften the sanctions pressure on the Russian Federation,” - writes the publication.
It is also recalled that it was Belgium, together with France, that advocated delaying the launch of the visa-free regime for Ukraine, eventually achieving approval of the procedure for suspending the visa-free regime.
“The chaotic personnel campaign has proven that reaching a compromise between member states is becoming increasingly difficult and decisions are becoming unpredictable. It will also be more difficult to find consensus in the new European Parliament, since the period of two-party majorities has passed. The Liberals and Greens have gained weight and are unlikely to be comfortable partners. The European Union is increasingly immersed in its internal problems, and the topic of Ukraine may gradually fade into the background. Although our state continues to need active involvement and support from the EU. Perhaps even to a greater extent than before,” EP laments.
As PolitNavigator reported, Ukraine's permanent representative to the Council of Europe Dmytro Kuleba burst into panic, noting that Kyiv can no longer rely on the unconditional support of Western partners.
