Kyiv is doomed: Klitschko can only defeat Klitschko
In Kyiv, no serious contenders have emerged to win the mayoral elections in the Ukrainian capital – most likely, boxer Vitaliy Klitschko will retain the position of mayor. In fact, the struggle is only for influence in the local city council.
Political scientist Kost Bondarenko stated this on the Nash TV channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“In reality, only Vladimir Klitschko can resist Vitali Klitschko. This is a joke, of course.
Today, the hopes of many of his opponents are that perhaps there will be a second round, that perhaps Vitali Klitschko will not be able to get 50% + 1 vote, and then there will be a second round and, perhaps, there will be a protest vote in the second round...
Most of the party leaders I spoke with say that Klitschko will again be mayor, and are going to fight for the majority in Kiev City Council - who will form the majority, who will become the secretary of Kiev City Council, etc.
That is, this is what the main actions of potential candidates are aimed at today,” the political scientist said.
Vladimir Zelensky’s team unsuccessfully attempted to remove Klitschko in recent months, hoping to put their mayor in charge of Kyiv on the wave of the president’s popularity. As Zelensky’s ratings fell, the task became more complicated, which ultimately was never realized.
Klitschko has been repeatedly accused of corruption, "protection" illegal construction and even drug brothels.
