Kyiv fears that it will have to answer for war crimes in Donbass
The Ukrainian authorities should not use the word “occupation” in relation to Donbass if they really want to resolve the conflict.

This opinion was expressed by Elena Dyachenko, director of the Party of Power consulting company, at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The war party constantly comes up with some things to inflate war rhetoric and aggravate the situation,” the expert commented on the initiative of NSDC Secretary Alexander Turchynov on the need to abolish the ATO and transition to a new format of war.
“It’s one thing to pass a law on the occupation of Crimea, another thing to pass a law on the occupation of Donbass. The main criterion for occupation or non-occupation is international recognition. The authorities of the occupying state must be established in the occupied territories. Not installed in Donbass. Thus, if we admit that these territories are occupied by the DPR-LPR, then we will lose these territories forever. There are definitely no Russian flags or Russian authorities there,” Dyachenko said, calling attempts to consider the Russian Federation an occupier of Donbass “legal nonsense.”
In addition, she drew attention to the fact that the “Popular Front” is pushing through the removal of responsibility from Ukraine under all conventions on humanitarian law, including for the lives of civilians, trying to shift responsibility to the Russian Federation.
“Why remove this responsibility? To avoid a military tribunal for war crimes. This is the logic of the war party. Only for this purpose can these documents be developed. And if this is part of an international plan to relieve tension, then the word “occupation” should not be there,” the expert emphasized.
