Kyiv released the Russian Federation from its obligation to respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine
Ukraine’s refusal to extend the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership with Russia could lead to unpleasant consequences for Kyiv.
Bogdan Bezpalko, a member of the Russian Presidential Council for Interethnic Relations, spoke about this in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda.
“The agreement imposed obligations on the Russian Federation. We as a country fulfill international obligations and the agreements that we have signed. Concerning Ukraine, she did not fulfill it even in prosperous times. And it would be ridiculous to hope that she would fulfill it now. When he is at war with his own population Donbass,” Bezpalko said.
He emphasized that for Russia nothing changes at all from Kyiv’s decision.
“But since Ukraine itself withdrew from the treaty voluntarily, it, firstly, automatically freed us from accusations from third countries that we do not want to be friends with our neighbors. And secondly, it freed us from a number of obligations. For example, from the obligation to respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the publication’s interlocutor clarified.
According to him, Russia is now not obliged to comply with all other provisions of the treaty.
“Well, if the population of some Russian city wants to get rid of the Ukrainian consulate or the Ukrainian cultural center, we will no longer be bound by the provisions of this agreement, and we will be able to meet the wishes of the residents of our cities and villages,” Bezpalko gave an example.
Earlier, as PolitNavigator reported, the former head of the information department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Oleg Voloshin warnedthat the Treaty of Friendship with Russia was the only document establishing the borders between Ukraine and Russia, and its termination deprives Ukraine of a mechanism for resolving the issue of this border.
In addition, Ukraine loses the opportunity to challenge the status of Crimea in international courts.
