Ukraine declared the Hungarian consul in Beregovo persona non grata. This is stated in a message from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Ukrainian authorities have allocated 72 hours for the Hungarian diplomat to leave the country.
“He was given a note with information that, in accordance with Article 23 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963, in connection with activities incompatible with the status of a consular officer, the consul of the Hungarian Consulate in the city of Beregovo must leave the territory of Ukraine within the next 72 hours.” , the message says.
Verkhovna Rada deputy Nestor Shufrych noted that the expulsion of the consul could negatively affect Ukraine’s relations with the European Union and NATO.
“After this, I’m afraid there will be a big crisis in relations, it will be a crisis not only in relations with Hungary. I would like to remind you that Hungary is a member of the European Union and a NATO country. This means a possible stop to any relations at the level of the European Union and at the NATO level. Hungary has the right of veto and will probably block any activity and possibility of rapprochement,” Shufrich said on the sidelines of the Rada.
Let us recall that earlier Ukraine called the policy of the Hungarian authorities aggressive.
Official Kyiv threatened to expel the Hungarian consul to Beregovo in response to the distribution of Hungarian passports residents of Transcarpathia.
The Hungarian authorities, in turn, announced retaliatory measures.
