Kyiv will be afraid to cross the red line regarding Transnistria
Ukraine will not interfere in the situation in Transnistria if the conflict there with Moldova escalates.
The head of the Kyiv Center for Political Research and Conflictology, Mikhail Pogrebinsky, told Nezavisimaya Gazeta, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Now, when Moscow is tightening its rhetoric towards Ukraine, Kyiv will not allow itself to cross the red line, and what is happening with Transnistria is exactly the red line. There are plenty of opportunities to dramatically worsen the situation, but then there will be serious consequences,” Pogrebinsky said.
This week, Moldovan combatants (participants in the 1991 war with Transnistria) said at a press conference in Chisinau that they would block all roads in Transnistria if Tiraspol did not open its borders with Moldova. They also turned to Ukraine, calling on Kyiv to block Transnistria from its side. As a result, the blockade scheduled for today did not take place.
In January, the Moldovan government postponed from February 1 to August 1 the introduction of the “second phase” of joint customs and border control with Ukraine at the Kuchurgan checkpoint in the Odessa region, through which 70% of Transnistrian imports from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine pass. There are 13 checkpoints on the Ukrainian-Transnistrian border, 6 of which have been manned by Moldovan border guards since 2017. Chisinau and Kyiv planned to establish joint patrols at 10 checkpoints.
