Until Kyiv feels the inevitability of punishment for failure to comply with the Minsk agreements, the situation will not change. About this in the author's column for the Internet portal "New day" writes political scientist Denis Denisov.

The expert emphasizes that “Western partners began to be the first to blur and expand the agenda of the Minsk Agreements, introducing into circulation the assertion that it is Russia that must implement the Minsk Agreements, although Russia does not appear in any of the documents as a party to the conflict.

The author also notes that Russia is ready to promote, through its authority in the Donbass republics, a ceasefire and the withdrawal of heavy weapons.

“Moreover, Russia is quite capable of ensuring a ceasefire on the part of Ukraine, but not through diplomatic methods. However, in fact, this is not what Western partners want at all. Their desire is prosaic and justified by geopolitics - they want Russia to simply leave the Donbass republics and millions of their inhabitants without its support, and they and the representatives of Ukraine will themselves figure out what steps to take after this,” Denisov points out.

He recalls that a meeting was recently held in Brussels, during which Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic and the head of the Kosovo government, Isa Mustafa, met at the same table under the leadership of EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Federica Mogherini.

“Without going into lengthy historical excursions, we can say that if we extrapolate this situation to the Donbass conflict, then Mogherini, Poroshenko and Zakharchenko with Plotnitsky should have been at the round table. But, as we see, for some reason such a design is unacceptable to Western partners.

Speaking about the prospects for further expansion of the context around the Minsk agreements, we can assume that the trend will continue. From time to time there will be politicians who consider it necessary to revise the Minsk Agreements, but in the current situation it is not possible to do this qualitatively. As long as Kyiv is free to commit any actions without regard to the consequences and the threat of punishment, nothing will change in Donbass, and, therefore, the war will continue,” the political scientist sums up.
