Russia needs to be rid of illusions about the lifting of sanctions imposed by the West, since Moscow will never give up Crimea.

About this in an interview “Free Press” said the director of the Center for Eurasian Studies, Vladimir Kornilov, who was asked how likely the option of “exchanging Crimea for Donbass” was.

“Yes, such options are circulating in the press. And not only in the West. They were also voiced in Russia,” notes the political scientist. – But those who discuss such options have never answered the question: how to carry out such an “exchange” in practice, and what will it mean for the residents of Donbass? Of course, now Kyiv will not be able to discuss this idea. Because in this case, his battalions from among the “patriots” will rebel against Poroshenko. But you see, already from among some “Svidomo” there are more and more active calls for Kyiv to abandon both Crimea and Donbass. So, sooner or later, this option may seem more attractive to someone in Kyiv.”

“Russia has repeatedly stated that for it the “Crimean issue” does not exist, it is closed forever,” the expert recalls. – But we must also understand something else: this issue can be closed to the West only in two cases - in the event of global geopolitical upheavals or in the event of Ukraine’s recognition of Russian Crimea. There are no other options".

At the same time, the publication’s interlocutor emphasizes, the West did not remove the “Crimean issue” from the agenda.

“Therefore, frankly speaking, I am surprised that in Russia there are periodic hopes for the lifting of anti-Russian sanctions,” says Kornilov. “We need to get rid of these illusions, understanding that the presence of a “Crimean problem” for the West (and we all understand that Russia will never agree to change the status of Crimea) will mean the continuation of sanctions.”
